Nón for every one
Nón for every one, Vietnam’s conical hat is covering the world
“Show me what kind of non you wear and I can tell you which class you belong to”. That was true in Vietnamese society as recently as the late 18th century when the size, shape and quality of leaf that male the non denoted seniority.
Nothing stays the same. The famed and fabled Vietnamese hat that used to come in many popular style as was widely used by every Vietnamese, gradually shrank in its varieties.
And that trademark head wear has become a necessity, an icon and a symbol. Non somewhat lie a large brimmed hat, speaks not only of the tropical climate but also of many cultural characteristics of Vietnam.
Made from the leaf of the palm tree, the non has been around for about 2500 years. The story is told of a warrior lord who went to battle wearing a conical shaped iron helmet.
When victory was assured that hat became part of everyday life. Non is no doubt popular and necessary due to its utility and beauty and is sold at every market throughout the country.
In Hanoi’s old quarter, from 17th to 19th century, there used to be a street that was dedicated to non only Hang Non Street. All the businesses sold only one item-the non.
It is no doubt that every area and province plays claim to be the home of the non. Each produces their locally flavoured version based on the basic design. Some notable styles come from the central provinces of Ha Tinh (Ky Anh area), Quang Binh (Ba Don area), Thua Thien Hue, Binh Dinh (Go Gang area), Thanh Hoa (non of 16-20 light brims) and some from the northern provinces of Lai Chai, Cao Bang.
But the most famous trademark originates from Chuong village (Phuong Trung Commune, Thanh Oai district, Ha Tay province, which is 20 km southeast of Hanoi).
The craft of making non began a long time ago, so long that even the oldest craftsman could not remember by whom and when the craft was introduced to the village. “ The carft’s histories at least 150 years old because when was child, I used to watch my grand parents making nonmuoi one of the may styles that require skillful hand” claims 74 year old craftsman Tran Van Can who is a master of making at least 5 types of non.
No one knows exactly the origin of the craft but there’s one thing for sure, the cratt reached the heyday under the Tran dynasty (13th century) when non became a tribute item. And since then the craft had been on an uninterrupted growth path, as non produced by Chuong villagers and the best in terms of both quality and appearance.
In the village, 60% of the population is devoted to the craft and almost everyone can make a non when they reach the age of eight. On average ten million items are sold each year and each special fair involves tens of thousands of non. Non Chuong fair at Chuong market is held 6 times per month, on the 4th, 10th, 14th, 20th, 24th, 30th day of the lunar calendar.
Wholesales trade of non is also held at Cao Bang market (2 km south of Chuong market, though a path by the dyke of Day River) on the 7th day of the lunar calendar.
However, everything must compete to develop. Non’s competitors are hats that come in various designs and materials and of course social changes have taken their toll. It seems that in recent years, non has become more popular with foreigners than with the locals who travel mainly by motorbikes or even by car where non is useless.
Non is rarely used nowadays as non is suitable only for walking. When going by motorbike, it is rather difficult and dangerous to wear. All this does not mean it has become redundant.
On the contrary, with its appearance nationwide and even abroad, non nerver loses its position as the country’s image and spirit.
Steps requiring patience and skil to male a non are as follows;
Green palm leaves (taken from the midlands of Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc or Ky anh HaTinh central province) are mixed with sand and trodden on in order to make them softer.
Dried in the sun tree times to make the leaves whiter, thinner and softer,
Ironing leaves on a piece of cast iron over a charcoal-stove.
Making the frame from small sticks of bamboo, then covering the frame with leaves.
Sewing it upside down, then separating from the frame.
Finishing, like making chin straps or vanishing or decorating.
Apart from being a hat warding off the hot sun or heavy rains, non can also be used as
A seat: after longs walk if someone feels tired, his/her non can provide seating
A basket: people use it to carry seeds or lunch to the field and to bring fruit, vegetables back to home.
A cup or a water scoop: non can function as a water scoop or a cup to quench one’s thirst
A dancing instrument: non appears in many Vietnamese dances
A fan: with is shape and size, non creates an effective fan
A mirror: some non have a small circular mirror inside so don’t be surprised if you see a woman making up her face while looking into one
A wind break: to ward against the wind to light a cigarette or against the sun when napping oustdoors
A screen to cover embarrassment and adorn a girl cham
A worship offering in honor of worriors; some places in the country put non on the alter.
Normal non most popular, he set in stone dimension are, 56 cms wide by 32 cms deep, with 16 strengthened bamboo circles, bound by palm trips, and a single thick bamboo rod to anchor its brim.
This conical hat has two folds of leaves: in between is cataphyll of bamboo. Sometimes a small circular mirror is fixed inside.
